The Top 50 Singles of 2020

 

As this nightmare year comes to a close... 

One thing is for certain: the music we received helped us through the fire. 

2020 has been a year marked by turmoil, division, hate, fear, uncertainty, and the worst forces of humankind towering above the voices of progression. It's been absolutely frightening to endure through. And yet, we've all grown stronger because of it.

During June, I brought Osmosis Tones to a halt because I was burnt out: with the world, with using writing as a creative outlet, with the state of my career and living situation, and oh so much more. I wasn't feeling enjoyment from my passions in the same way anymore. I didn't know what to do. 

But over the remainder of the year, I became confident in myself again. I learned to love myself in ways I hadn't done prior, I recaptured my love of being a music fan who can discuss why he loves the music a little more deeply, and I put myself back on the path to becoming the person I've always wanted to be. Personal growth needed to happen before I could return to this site, but with how I'm feeling now, I look forward to continually making my voice heard in the way I want it to be.

Through all this personal growth, I listened to some of the best damn music of 2020. In making this single's list, I ranked my love of these songs by their lyrical resonance, instrumental spunk, and how TIMELESS the songs felt within the context of this hell-scape.

Review: Likewise - Frances Quinlan

By Greg Wiacek I’m going to try to review Frances Quinlan’s debut solo album without mentioning her voice. Fuck. But what a voice. It’s often the first thing people notice when they hear her band, Hop Along . Raw and powerful yet tender, Quinlan constantly takes it in unpredictable directions, at times pushing it to what sounds like the physical limits of the larynx. Her erratic melodies and penchant for drastic shifts in dynamics (literally going from a scream to a whisper at times) would likely sound like a complete mess if sung by anyone else. But she’s a master at controlling the chaos, making it sound composed, natural, and ultimately captivating. Review: Music to Be Murdered By - Eminem

By Luke Robinson “I don’t like rap except for Eminem” has become the new white power slogan. The crown prince of controversy is well into the late stages of his career. Since 2010, he’s been consistently mediocre to pathetic, and has struggled to adapt to the times, amping up the anger (and cringe) while spouting off horrid staccato bars that are as much ill-advised edge as they are juvenile. 2017’s Revival , the laziest, cobbled-together attempt at pop rap of his career, resulted in Em becoming horrifically emotional after critics and audiences alike despised it. In the eight months that followed, he decided to pick a fight with MGK - which is like trying to rob a soup kitchen - and released Kamikaze , his big “fuck you” to the world in an attempt to prove he could still rap intensely. Review: Fetch The Bolt Cutters - Fiona Apple

By Greg Wiacek Alright, let’s address the elephant in the room: as of the time of this writing, Fetch The Bolt Cutters, the fifth record from singer/songwriter Fiona Apple, holds a perfect 100 on Metacritic , averaged from 21 different high-profile reviews. A certain music blog , who awarded this album its first perfect rating in nearly an entire decade, concluded that “no music has ever sounded like [this album].” The quote comes off just a bit hyperbolic, given that the roots of this album largely carry over from Fiona’s (excellent) previous album from eight years ago, The Idler Wheel... (that’s all of that title I’m typing out, damn it!). The primary difference, however, is that this album has an additional injection of inspiration from the production styles of Kate Bush’s The Dreaming (whom she brilliantly references later in the album) and Tom Waits’ Bone Machine .
